So New Authors
Submissions
So New publishes novel-length fiction, essay collections, short fiction and Necessary Fiction, a weekly webjournal of new literary fiction.
We seek writing that pushes the bounds of language, that is passionate, exciting, experimental and deeply felt — while still telling a great story. Our brand of fiction is not defined by genre but could contain elements of many methods of storytelling — from crime to romance to chick-lit to action-adventure to you-name-it. We want to read work that is in love with language, excited about telling a story, and ruthless about economy. (Humor and sex keep us interested, too.)
For writers we don’t know, Necessary Fiction is the best way to get our attention. Recognizing that there is no “better” — only different — we seek work that fits So New’s mission of bold storytelling, strong voice, and vivid point-of-view. Send submissions of 2000 words or less via email to editor@necessaryfiction.com and include the word “submission” as well as the title of the piece in the subject line of your email.
Please don’t send multiple submissions — either together, or sending a second submission while a first is still under consideration. Unfortunately, we’re so strapped for time that multiple submissions will be deleted unread. (We’re not mean, we’re volunteers!) Also, please wait a few weeks between submissions. We love to read your work, but sending one submission after another makes it very difficult to read an author’s work attentively.
For trade paperbacks, we work exclusively with authors we already know, so please consider submitting to Necessary Fiction.
