Scoliosis, a medical condition characterized by an unnatural curvature of the spine, isn’t talked about much in the mainstream media. Why is that? Even though scoliosis is something that can dramatically change someone’s life (it certainly has changed mine), no one talks about it. Cancer, diabetes, even EDD, seem to be spoken about more openly in the news than scoliosis.
I’m putting this out there to say I want to see this changed. I was diagnosed with scoliosis at age 14 and endured a ten-vertebrae spinal fusion (despite plenty of scoliosis exercises and medical intervention), physical therapy, and a lifelong desire to have done something different than the fusion. Scoliosis is never talked about so I don’t have much of a voice in the matter. I want to say that I have scoliosis, I’m frustrated with the medical industry’s treatment of it, and I want to hear more about it!
I didn’t choose scoliosis — it chose me — but that doesn’t mean I want to walk around pretending like it doesn’t exist. I want people, especially children and young adults, to be able to talk about it and not be scared.
If you have scoliosis or know someone who does, please share this blog post. We need to get the word out!
